The future battle on the ground will be preceded by battle in the air. This will determine which of the contestants has to suffer operational and tactical disadvantages and be forced throughout the battle into adopting compromise solutions.

JG2 Richtofen Shield In 1925 the Soviets lent the use of the Lipetsk airfield nearly 250 miles south of Moscow. To circumvent the Treaty of Versailles the Germans kept this secret, using over 100 WWI pilots to reform and train a new Luftwaffe. Over a decade later, in 1936, after the march into the demilitarized zone, with 23 Gruppen of varying types the civilian based names were dropped and Jagdgeschwader 132 came to be in name and actuality. For those in the know the number 132 was significant, 1 for first unit of its kind, 3 for fighter type aircraft and finally 2 for the area in which it was deployed (Berlin). Another change in designation was followed (131) prior to the final one of JG2 in May of `39, it is unclear why it was not given the designation of JG1. Jagdgeschwader 2 (JG2 'Richthofen') was named from the famous WWI ace, Manfred von Richthofen, or 'Red Baron'. At the outset of WWII JG2 was on Reich's defense during the Polish campaign, it effectively first saw action during the blitzkrieg in France and the low countries. Originally fitted with Bf 109E's and stationed in France, JG26 was the only other JG on the western front during the Battle of Britain. In May of `42 II Gruppe was up'n the FW 190A-2, in `43 they'd also utilize the 109G and then again return to the FW. JG2 was moved to Tunisia in November `42 to see action in Africa where their prestige only grew prior to returning back to France in March of `43.
